EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball swept Wisconsin 3-0 at Jenison Field House tonight, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-20. The Spartans have won four consecutive matches over conference opponents for the first time since 2003.
"It is really important for us, we needed those wins and we wanted to gain momentum going into the end of the season," head coach Cathy George said of the winning streak. "You can see composure building in the team and that is really important for us, we need to continue in that direction."
The Spartans opened the match with a 25-19 win in set one. Michigan State led 12-8 before the Badgers used a 6-0 run to go up 14-12. The Spartans battled back and took a 16-15 lead after two straight service aces from Lauren Wicinski. Kelsey Kuipers added a kill late to make it 21-18 in favor of MSU and forced a Wisconsin timeout. Wicinski added a kill on an assist from Kori Moster and Kuipers ended the set with another kill from the right side, giving Michigan State a 1-0 match lead.
Michigan State took a 2-0 match lead after taking set two, 25-20. The Spartans hit .448 percent in the game and the Badgers countered with a .321 mark. MSU never trailed in the set and took a 15-10 lead after Jazmine White notched a kill, forcing a Wisconsin timeout. Alexis Mathews put down a kill in the middle for MSU and Wisconsin used its second timeout trailing 21-17. MSU had a pair of attack errors but Lauren Wicinski recorded her eighth kill of the night to give the Spartans a 25-20 win.
Kelsey Kuipers and Alexis Mathews completed the sweep with a block in the middle to give MSU a 25-20 win in the third game. The Spartans jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set after a service ace from Wicinski. Wisconsin climbed back and trailed 16-15 after four straight points forced a Michigan State timeout. MSU took a 22-20 lead before Wicinski and Kuipers each recorded kills, followed by the block from Mathews and Kuipers to finish the sweep.
The Spartans were led by five kills and six blocks by Alexis Mathews and Kristen Kelsay had 25 assists and seven digs. Lauren Wicinski had seven digs to go along with 13 kills and five aces and Amy Dentlinger had eight kills and three blocks. Kori Moster added eight digs, four assists and a service ace.
Michigan State is on the road next weekend and will face Illinois on Nov. 16 before taking on Northwestern on Nov. 17
