Michigan State opened the 2013 season with a 3-0 win over St. Francis on Friday morning at the Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech.
The Spartans opened up wide margins in each of the first two sets, then battled point-for-point with the Flash in the third set before finishing it off (25-8, 25-8, 25-21). The Spartans just narrowly missed a school record for fewest points allowed an opponent, limiting the Flash to just 37 points in the three-set match, two shy of the record of 35 MSU set last season against Dartmouth.
MSU has a slight break on Friday afternoon before returning to the court at 5 p.m. for a match against Towson. MSU will play two matches on Saturday, against Pacific and host Virginia Tech.
