Michigan State defeated Kentucky 78-74 Tuesday night in Chicago in a battle of the top two men's basketball teams ranked at the top of the Associated Press poll. MSU led 10-0 and 44-32 at halftime but the Wildcats tied the game at 66 all. Keith Appling hit a three and Gary Harris scored off a steal to give MSU a five point lead again and Kentucky couldn't catch up. Keith Appling had 22 points and Harris 20 for the Spartans and freshman Julius Randle led Kentucky with 27. Kentucky outrebounded MSU 45-29 but only went 20 of 36 at the free throw line. MSU hosts Columbia in its next gmae at 9pm Friday. MSU is now 2-0 on the season.
