Kelly Smith Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior Kelly Smith (Friendswood, Texas) has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. The junior transferred to Michigan State this season from McLennan Community College.

In the series against Indiana, Smith pitched 17 innings for the Spartans and allowed only one earned run, two runs total. She tallied 20 strikeouts over the weekend and Indiana saw only eight hits when she was on the mound. Smith owned a 0.41 ERA for the weekend.

This season, Smith owns a 13-7 record in 129 2/3 innings pitched and leads MSU on the mound with a 2.05 ERA. The junior has tallied 145 strikeouts this season and now sits at eighth in the MSU record book for single-season strikeouts.

The last Michigan State Pitcher of the Week honor was Gina Mondo on March 10, 2008. Stephanie Sanders was last to earn a Big Ten weekly honor on March 19, 2012.
