EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State redshirt junior right-hander Chase Rihtarchik has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Rihtarchik threw a complete game no-hitter against Oakland, leading the Spartans past the Golden Grizzlies, 3-2 on Saturday, March 23. It marked MSU's first no-hitter since Nolan Moody accomplished the feat against Northwestern in 2009.
Rihtarchik faced 31 batters, allowed just three walks, had three strikeouts and both of Oakland's runs were unearned.
"He was able to overcome a few mistakes that we made defensively, allowing two unearned runs," head coach Jake Boss said after the no-hitter. "But he kept throwing strikes and hung in there. I am really happy for him and proud of him. He has worked very hard over the last couple years and he is starting to show some fruits of that labor."
It is the first career Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for Rihtarchik and the first for MSU since Tony Bucciferro on May 14, 2012.
Michigan State (13-7), winners of seven straight, returns to action in a midweek contest against Central Michigan on Wednesday at McLane Stadium at 3:05 p.m.
