Two days after Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer won the Cy Young Award, teammate Miguel Cabrera was named American League most valuable player for the 2013 season. Cabrera wins for the second year in a row, the first A-L player to do so since Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox in 1993-94. Cabrera hit 44 home runs and hit .344 and was bothered the final month of the season by a groin injury which required surgery in October. Cabrera garned 23 of 30 first place votes. Justin Verlander was named MVP in 2011 meaning the Tigers have had the last three A-L MVP winners.
