Cabrera, TinCaps keep Lugnuts sliding, 7-2

LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (30-29, 77-51) offense was stifled by Fort Wayne TinCaps (34-27, 64-66) starter Erik Cabrera in a 7-2 series-opening loss on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium in front of 9,870.

The Lugs will have to wait another day to try and tie the franchise’s single-season record for wins in a season.

Cabrera (Win, 1-3) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed three hits and walked three. The righty struck out five and allowed two runs; one earned and one unearned. Lugnuts centerfielder Nick Baligod (2-for-3) scored both of Lansing’s runs.

Cody Hebner (Save, 1) tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings out of the TinCaps’ bullpen while allowing three hits and striking out four.

The Lugnuts pitching staff surrendered double-digit hits for the third game in a row. The big blow game in the top of the fifth inning when TinCaps catcher Austin Hedges delivered a two-out, two-RBI triple off of Phil Brua.

Travis Jankowski added three hits and a run while Travis Whitmore recorded two hits, an RBI and a run scored for Fort Wayne.

Lugnuts starter Aaron Sanchez (Loss, 8-4) worked three innings, allowed four hits and walked one. The righty gave up two runs, both in the third inning, only one of which was earned.

Lansing’s bullpen gave up six hits and five runs in six innings. Brua allowed three runs in three innings of work. Shawn Griffith went three innings, struck out four and gave up a pair of runs.
