ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- It wasn't a mountain that fell on No. 5 Michigan today, but a group of Mountaineers shocked the Big Ten powerhouse at home, 34-32.
The first of two blocked field goals in the final minutes by tiny Appalachian State stopped a Wolverine drive. That allowed Julian Rauch to put the Mountaineers up for good with a 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds to go.
Michigan threatened to score in the final seconds, but the second blocked field goal sealed the win.
Appalachian State had led Michigan 28-14 late in the second quarter before the Wolverines began a comeback.
The win by the school from Boone, N.C., may have been one of the biggest upsets in college football history and a bad omen for Michigan as it tunes up for tough conference games.
