Spartans To See 2 Quarterbacks In Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Both Sam Hunt and Joseph Webb will see action at quarterback in UAB's season opener at Michigan State, and Webb also will start at wide receiver, coach Neil Callaway said.
Callaway said Hunt, a senior, likely will start at quarterback on Sept. 1, but Webb will be on the field for the first snap as a receiver. He said Webb, a sophomore, also will "play a lot of quarterback. We're going to be interchangeable."
"We've got to have them both on the field," he told The Birmingham News in a story Tuesday. "They're two of our better athletes. They're two of our better competitors, and two of our guys we think can make plays."
Callaway had hoped one of the players would emerge as a clear-cut starter, but Hunt holds only a slight lead in the competition.
Callaway and offensive coordinator Kim Helton decided both players needed to be on the field. The quarterback rotation could change weekly.
"I don't think it makes any sense to have a situation where we have one of those two guys sitting on the bench," Callaway said. "Both of those guys are going to be on the field, if not every (offensive) snap, then almost every snap. They both will be tired when they come out of the ball game."
Callaway told the players of the decision on Sunday.
"We've known all along that we were both going to have to help the offense (at both positions)," Hunt said. "It wasn't a big deal. It's not tough luck either way."
"We're not going to be as sharp as the receivers who do it every day," he said. "But if we can catch balls and run fast and make plays, I think we can handle it."
