EAST LANSING, Mich. - Following a season that included a Big Ten Title and a trip to the NCAA Championships for the first time in 14 years, current and former Spartans are representing Michigan State in the golf world on both local and national stages.

At the 96th Michigan Amateur Championship, on June 19-23 in Royal Oak, Mich., Ryan Brehm entered match play seeded second after posting a 36-hole total of 141 (71-70) in stroke play on the par-72, 6,850-yard Red Golf Club Course. Teammates Steve Cuzzort (70-76--146) and Grant Tungate (74-75--149), who also participated in the tournament, were seeded Nos. 12 and 28, respectively.

Brehm made his way to the finals through match play with his closest matches against Rich Saferian, which he won 1-up, and a 20-hole win over Randy Lewis. Cuzzort also found himself in the championship round, after posting a 1-up against Tungate in the third round. With an all-Spartan final round set, Brehm defeated Cuzzort, 2 and 1, notching his first win at the Michigan Amateur after coming in second last year. The Detroit News was there to cover the Spartans' win.

Former Spartans Matt Harmon and Andrew Ruthkoski received sponsor exemptions for the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, Mich., on June 28-July 1. Harmon will be competing in his first PGA tournament after finishing his career with the Spartans in June.

Ruthkoski will participate in the Buick Open for the second consecutive year and is coming off a win at the recent Michigan Open. Ruthkoski, a member of the 2002-05 Spartan teams, failed to make the cut at last year's Buick Open, carding a 149 (77-72).

Ruthkoski is scheduled to tee off at 1:21 p.m. and Harmon will tee at 1:48 p.m. from the 10th hole on June 28. Both golfers look to finish in the top 70 (including ties) to move forward to the final two rounds. Live results can be followed on PGAtour.com.
