BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) — Scott Lantis singled in the ninth inning to give Hillsdale the go-ahead run in its 8-6 win over Beaverton in the Division 3 Michigan High School Athletic Association final Saturday.
The game was tied 6-6 going into the ninth when Lantis hit one of his three RBIs of the game for the Hornets (23-20), giving them their first Division 3 baseball title. He scored the insurance run on a Pat Vear single.
Paul Stuchell pitched a complete game for Hillsdale, giving up seven hits, striking out eight and walking seven.
Hillsdale jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Beaverton (22-10) tied the game 2-2 in the third. Beaverton took a 6-2 lead in the fourth with help from a three-run homer by Jake Oard, but wouldn't score again.
Hillsdale scored three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh.
