MSU Sets Criteria For Next Athletics Director

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University today released "desirable criteria" for the director of athletics who will succeed Ron Mason.

Mason has announced his intention to retire by the expiration of his contract in June 2008.

"As we announce these criteria preceding selection of the next AD, it is important to remember that Ron will be on the job with the energy and commitment that has marked his career," Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon said. "We want a transition that doesn't skip a beat, that doesn't pause. With Ron, we have someone who `coaches' just as hard in the last minute of the last game."

A trustee committee, chaired by Melanie Foster, will advise on the process and the adherence of candidates to the criteria. Trustees George Perles and Colleen McNamara also serve on the advisory group.

Here are the criteria:

• A minimum of 10 years experience as a NCAA Division I senior athletic administrator or senior management corporate leadership experience.
• A minimum of five years experience in financial administration, fundraising, games operations, facility management, personnel policy, and public relations within a major athletic conference or corporate environment.
• Understanding of the role of NCAA Division I athletics in the context of an academic environment, emphasizing the importance of the scholarly growth and development of student athletes.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; capacity to develop a strong and inclusive leadership team.
• Demonstrated high level of personal integrity and ethical standards, including commitment to and compliance with NCAA and Big Ten Conference rules.
• Commitment to MSU's core values of quality, inclusion, and connectivity; ability to apply these values in leadership and management of Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
• Ability to present innovative approaches for revenue development in athletics.
• Ability to conduct long-range strategic, financial, and facility planning and budgeting on behalf of the department.
• Ability to work collaboratively with senior university administration and other relevant university departments.
• Ability to communicate effectively with and command respect of coaches, student-athletes, and other internal athletic constituencies, across all intercollegiate sports.
• Ability to communicate effectively with media, alumni, donors, boosters, and other external constituencies.
