SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Michigan State improved on its first round total of 319 with a 290 at today's second round of the NCAA Central Regionals. The Spartans moved up from a tie for 18th place yesterday to a tie for 11th after 36 holes and are two shots out of the top 10. Ryan Brehm led the Spartans with a 69 after carding an 83 yesterday on the par-72, 7,214-yard Rich Harvest Farms course.

"We played with a lot of determination today," head coach Mark Hankins said. "The weather was great and we fought our way to a good team score. We aren't where we would like to be after two rounds but it's where you're at when the final group finishes on Saturday that matters. We want to stick to our game plan, relax tomorrow and expect the best."

After two rounds, No. 7 Tulsa (305-280--585) leads the 27-team field with a seven-shot advantage over second-place No. 18 Louisville (294-298--592).

Matt Harmon combined a second-day round of 73 with yesterday's 75 with five birdies and 22 pars for a 4-over total, to go into the third round in a tie for 15th place. He is the highest Spartan on the leader board going into tomorrow's final round.

Brehm had the lowest score of the day and the only sub-par round by any Spartan during the tournament with a 3-under par 69 for a 152 (+8) sum. The Second Team All-Big Ten golfer moved up 63 spots from 98th to 35th.

"Ryan's 69 (-3) was a nice score today," Hankins said. "There were a few lower but he managed his game well and made some key putts."

Jack Newman posted three birdies, two more than yesterday's round, to finish 2-over during the second round bringing his score to 10-over par 144 (80-74) and in a tie for 57th.

After carding an 81 on day one, Grant Tungate scored a 2-over par 74 by combining four birdies and 10 pars for an 11-over par 155 two-day total. The Okemos native is in tie for 66th place and has tallied six birdies for the tournament.

Steve Cuzzort finished his 18 holes with two consecutive bogeys on the par-4 No. 15 and the par-5 No. 15 to complete the afternoon with a 77, a vast improvement from his first round score of 84. He is currently tied for a tie for 107th place.

The Spartans continue tomorrow with the last of three rounds. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those teams will move on to the NCAA Championships at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., beginning on May 30.
