Michigan State University trustees Friday voted Friday to name a plaza after former football coach George Perles and his wife in recognition of a $500,000 gift.

The George J. Perles and Sally A. Perles Plaza is next to the Duffy Daugherty Football Building and part of a $12 million renovation. The plaza is designed to provide a public gathering space.

Perles, a Michigan State graduate, played football under Daugherty. He was head coach from 1982-94 and athletic director in 1988. He was elected to the board of trustees in November.
