DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit Tigers slugger Gary Sheffield is on a leave of absence from the team, but his lawyer says he's expected to return over the weekend.
Rufus Williams says in an e-mail that his client is involved in a baseball-related legal proceeding brought about by a previous agent.
Tigers G-M Dave Dombrowski wrote in an e-mail message that Sheffield "has an excused absence and is tending to personal business."
Sheffield is Detroit's main offseason acquisition. He's hitting .174 with one home run and five R-B-Is this spring. He hasn't played since Monday.
