A federal judge has rejected a Michigan High School Athletic Association plan to change the seasons of five sports.

This plan was supposed to create more scheduling equity among the state's boys and girls teams.

In a ruling released today, U.S. District Judge Richard A. Enslen wrote that the proposal for golf, tennis, soccer and swimming and diving didn't achieve equity.

He gave the MHSAA until Oct. 30 to choose from three options.

One of the options would combine all sports seasons so both sexes' teams play during the same time of year. Either of the two remaining choices would switch the seasons of girls basketball and volleyball.

Enslen ruled Dec. 17 that the MHSAA discriminates against females in the scheduling of some sports.

The MHSAA is the state's governing body for high school athletics.
