Lansing's John Smoltz has left the Boston Red Sox and is heading to Florida to pitch a rehab assignment this Saturday. The 41-year old Lansing native has not pitched for the Red Sox this season but hopes to be in the lineup by June. His elbow surgery last season has required more rehab than he wanted. He plans to treat his Florida stint like regular spring training. Therer is no timetable for his return to the Red Sox team. Smoltz signed in January a one year deal with Boston after spending 20 seasons with the Atlanta Braves.
