Justin Verlander was not very sharp, but neither was the ace of the New York Yankees' staff, C. C. Sabbathia. In Lakeland Wednesday, the Tigers beat New York 7-4 behind two Gary Sheffield home runs, both off Sabbathia. Sheffield has a guaranteed $14 million contract this year, the final year of his contract at age 38.
Sabbathia said he felt fairly sharp, but that the Tigers simply were able to get the bat on the ball during a five run second inning.
