Michigan State's hockey team is practicing this entire week on the big ice sheet at the Summit-- it's the size the Spartans will play in Marquette Friday and at least Saturday against Northern Michigan in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. If MSU wins, it likely would play at second ranked Notre Dame in round two. MSU lost twice at Northern in the early part of the regular season.
MSu is 10-21-5 through the regular season and scored just one goal in its last three games, all losses. But MSU coach Rick Comley hopes his team can ride hot goaltending from senior Jeff Lerg to round two. It's the first time MSU has opened the playoffs on the road since 1991.
Northern knocked MSU out of the first round last year, winning game three in overtime, 3-2. Other first round series have Bowling Green at Ohio State, Lake Superior State at Western Michigan and Ferris at Omaha.
