NEW JOB FOR FORMER SPARTAN PLAYER/COACH

Two years ago, when Michigan State eventually hired Mark Dantonio to replace John L. Smith as head football coach, Pat Shurmur was among the top candidates. Shurmur had George Perles' endorsement. Shurmur played for Perles and later was an MSU assistant coach. He became quarterbacks coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999 and has been in that job until now. The 43-year old Shurmur is leaving Donovan McNabb and head coach Andy Reid to become offensive coordinator of the NFL's St. Louis Rams.
