Lions Announce New Defensive Coordinator

By  |

The Detroit Lions have hired former Kansas City Chiefs coach Gunther Cunningham to be their new defensive coordinator. The move was announced Wednesday morning. Terms of his contract were not disclosed.

Cunningham is a 40-year coaching veteran on the college and pro level and represents the first major hire by newly installed Lions coach Jim Schwartz.

Cunningham was Kansas City's head coach from 1999-2000 and the Chiefs' defensive coordinator in 1995-98 and 2004-08. He also served alongside Schwartz on the Tennessee Titans' staff.

His work will be cut out for him. Detroit didn't win a game last season and had one of the league's worst defensive units.
