Spartans Snap Skid, Beat Delaware State 71-41

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women’s basketball team (7-4) snapped a four-game losing streak this evening, recording a 71-41 win over Delaware State (2-7). Junior Allyssa DeHaan and classmate Aisha Jefferson led Michigan State with 15 points each. The Spartans held the Hornets to 12 points in the first half, tying the school record of fewest points allowed in a first half, set on Jan. 16, 2003 against Indiana.

DeHaan helped the Spartans jump out to an early lead, recording 10 points, including eight-straight in just over two minutes. The Spartan defense took command of the game at 15:17 with a 6-5 lead and held the Hornets scoreless over the next 10:55. During the span, MSU scored 21 unanswered, opening a 27-5 lead. Michigan State held Delaware State to 4-of-19 field goal and forced 16 turnovers in the first half to go into the half with a 32-12 lead.

Jefferson paced the Green and White in the second half, recording nine of her 15 points and freshman Courtney Schiffauer posted seven points. The Spartans were 13-of-14 from the free throw line in the second half.

Michigan State opens Big Ten play at Penn State on Sunday, Dec. 21. The game begins at noon and will be aired by the Big Ten Network.
