Spartan Ladies Fall on the Road...Again

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Michigan State women's basketball team dropped its fourth-straight game this afternoon at Xavier, 71-66. The Spartans, who fall to 6-4 on the season, were led by a career-high 15 points by junior Mandy Piechowski. Xavier improves to 8-3 and were paced by 25 points, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range, from Jerri Taylor.

Junior Allyssa DeHaan tied her own school record with nine blocks in the loss, and nearly posted a triple-double, adding eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Brittney Thomas set a season high with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, while also having a team-high four assists. Redshirt junior Aisha Jefferson chipped in 10 points and six rebounds and Piechowski tied her career high with four 3-pointers on seven attempts.

For the second straight game, the Spartans fell behind early. MSU went scoreless over the first six minutes, missing their first nine shots, to find themselves in an 8-0 hole. They would fight back, getting within two at 16-14 on a Piechowski 3-pointer with 7:04 on the clock. Xavier would expand its lead up to nine (30-21) with 1:18 left, but MSU would tally the final five points, capped by a 3-pointer at the buzzer from DeHaan, for a 30-26 halftime score.

A jumper by Jefferson began the second half and got the Spartans within two, but Xavier followed with a 12-2 run over the next 5:13 to open up its biggest lead of the game at 42-30. The Spartans would slowly chip away at the deficit, getting within two (53-51) with 6:45 remaining. Minutes later, a layup by Thomas and a jumper by Jefferson closed it to one (58-57) with 3:30 on the clock. That would be as close as MSU would get, as the Musketeers hit six of eight from the line in the final three minutes to seal the win.
