The Lansing School District has suspended Eastern High School football coach Tommie Boyd and forfeited last week's season-opening 34-20 win over Detroit U of D Jesuit High School because Boyd used academically ineligible players. In addition, the district has placed Eastern Athletic Director Mario Villareal on administrative leave and removed five academically ineligible players from the team.

An interim coach will be named Friday to lead the Quakers against Lansing Sexton. The Michigan High School Athletic Association will be notified when an investigation is finished.

Lansing Schools Superintendent T.C. Wallace released the following statement:

"Student eligibility rules are clearly spelled out by Lansing School District policy and Michigan High School Athletic Association guidelines. We need to reinforce with our staff, students athletes, families and athletic boosters that eligibility rules apply to everyone and are not optional. More importantly, we want our school community to know that being accountable and following the rules go hand-in-hand with strong academic scholarship and athletic sportsmanship."

It is also very interesting to me that these kids are being called out for being ineligible now. My guess is that if they are ineligible now, they were ineligible when Saade (should be spelled SAD) played them! Why don't we also look at the records from last year and see if SAD played any of these students when they were ineligible? We can't forfeit any of those games (because SAD lost all of those too), but we can also deal with SAD accordingly. What's good for the goose is also good for the gander. v

We need to know the whole story. Don't judge lest yee be judged. Mr Villarreal/ Mr. Boyd seems like he was doing his job. The new couch seems to me like could have been caught up in the moment and sent the players out. I really don't feel this is news that needs to be on every station and in the paper. People in Lansing really should find them some business. Everybody business is not your business. These people do have families lets give them some type of respect. I hope this matter it quickly resolved and these gentlemen are returned back to work.

Coaches are teachers about how to excel at life. They should not give approval that it is alright to win at all cost even if it means cheating or 'bending' the rules.

So exactly what made these players academically ineligibible? They couldn't posibly have been failing classes in the first week of school.

Knowing first hand what Villareal is all about with children at Eastern, I can only agree with ed jones, it is way past time to see A.D. Villareal GONE!

its past due for change in the ath. Dir. office. A.D. Villareal has been the leader that has caused half the problems and overlooked the other 50%. Its past time for new leadership at the top so Coach Boyd has a fair shot at building a successfull program

Does it really make a differance who reported the ineligibilty and where would you get the impression that the coach across town was disgruntled unless you are in Villareal's back pocket. He seems to be the only one that percieves the situation that way.

This is very disturbing, I hope a disgruntled coach across town did start up this mess. Mario should watch this better.
