EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Shasta Averyhardt of Flint defeated two-time champion Joan Garety of Ada 6 and 5 in the first round of match play in the 92nd Michigan Women's Amateur Championship.
The 22-year-old Averyhardt, last year's tournament runner-up, earned medalist honors following two rounds of stroke play Monday and Tuesday at Walnut Hills Country Club. She started Wednesday's round with a double bogey but recovered with a pair of birdies.
Julie Massa of Holt, the runner-up in stroke play, defeated Sarah Hoffman of Saline 1-up.
Massa, Averyhardt and defending champion Laura Bavaird of Grosse Ile were among 16 golfers who advanced Wednesday to two more rounds of match play Thursday. The semifinals and the championship are set for Friday.
