Day 3 of MI Women's Amateur in the Books

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Shasta Averyhardt of Flint defeated two-time champion Joan Garety of Ada 6 and 5 in the first round of match play in the 92nd Michigan Women's Amateur Championship.
The 22-year-old Averyhardt, last year's tournament runner-up, earned medalist honors following two rounds of stroke play Monday and Tuesday at Walnut Hills Country Club. She started Wednesday's round with a double bogey but recovered with a pair of birdies.
Julie Massa of Holt, the runner-up in stroke play, defeated Sarah Hoffman of Saline 1-up.
Massa, Averyhardt and defending champion Laura Bavaird of Grosse Ile were among 16 golfers who advanced Wednesday to two more rounds of match play Thursday.
