PORTAGE, Mich. (AP) -- Jimmy Chestnut of Grand Blanc has won the 97th Michigan Amateur with a 4 and 2 victory over 2007 runner-up Steve Cuzzort of Grosse Ile.
Saturday's victory at The Moors means Chestnut will receive an automatic 5-year exemption in the Michigan Amateur Championship, as well as the Western Amateur, Susquehanna Amateur in Pennsylvania, the Michigan Open and the Golf Association of Michigan Championship.
Chestnut, a Michigan State graduate who reached the semifinals in the 2005 Michigan Amateur, advanced by defeating Mark Schoenborn of Grand Rapids 1-up.
Cuzzort, who won the 2007 GAM Championship and still plays at Michigan State, posted a 21-hole victory over Tom Werkmeister of Kentwood in the other semifinal.
