EAST LANSING, Mich. – MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis has announced the promotion of Paul Schager to Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. Schager’s management responsibilities will include the Spartan Ticket Office, Sales and Marketing, and Sports Broadcasting. In his 11th year at Michigan State, Schager also will lead the department’s branding, resource development and marketing initiatives.
The initiatives led by Schager will be implemented to increase athletic ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and attendance at athletic events while providing improved customer service and enhanced game-day experience for fans. In addition, Schager will coordinate the department’s external relationships with the Big Ten Network, Spartan Radio Network, coaches television shows and official department web site, msuspartans.com.
"Paul and I have worked side-by-side for more than 10 years," said MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis, "and no one is more deserving of this position than Paul. He has a unique skill set and has proven over the years that he not only works hard, but cares deeply about Michigan State. I’m excited about giving him an opportunity to further enhance the department."
"I’ve been fortunate to have worked closely with Mark Hollis since I arrived at MSU," said Schager. "I look forward to my expanded role in the department and serving Michigan State University as a key member of his staff."
Schager joined Michigan State in May 1998 as director of marketing after working at the University of Michigan for eight years (1990-98) as the director of licensing and the assistant director of marketing. He was named an assistant athletics director at MSU in 2001 and was responsible for coordinating corporate marketing and sponsorship sales for the athletic department. He also administered the athletics department courtesy car program and provided support for radio network and game program agreements.
A former Division I athlete, Schager earned three varsity letters in baseball at the University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1987. He earned his master’s in sports science in 1991 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, Jane, and three children, Samantha, Jessica and Charlie, live in DeWitt.
