LANSING – Luis Perez turned in his best start of the season and the Lansing offense scored early and often to take a 5-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks before 2,506 fans at Oldsmobile Park Friday night. The victory is the Lansing's fourth straight.
Lansing held a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Yohernyn Chavez blasted his fourth home run of the season, a solo blast the made it 2-0.
The Lugnuts put two more on the board in the third in order to double their lead at 4-0. Justin Jackson drew a lead-off walk and came around to score on Kevin Ahrens' double into right-center field. Ahrens would be brought home two batters later when Matt Liuzza laced a single into left field.
Luis Perez (1-4) took over from there as he held the Silver Hawks hitless for the first five innings of the game en route to his first win of the year. Perez threw a total of six frames and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out eight in the contest.
Jordan Norberto (0-5) suffered the loss for the Silver Hawks after giving up five runs over four innings of work. Four of the runs were earned against him as he also walked five in his outing.
Lansing (25-22) and South Bend (19-27) will play a doubleheader on Saturday evening at Oldsmobile Park beginning at 6:05 p.m. Each game will be seven innings in length and LAFCU Fireworks will follow the conclusion of the second game.
