EAST LANSING, Mich. - Indiana won both ends of a doubleheader Friday to clinch a series win over the Michigan State baseball team. The Spartans dropped a 7-6 decision to the Hoosiers in game one before Indiana completed the sweep with a 7-3 victory in game two. This weekend's three losses mathematically eliminates MSU from the Big Ten Tournament race.

Freshman Jonathan Roof and sophomore Chris Roberts each had three hits to lead Michigan State. Junior Kyle Day had a three-run homer in game one and a triple in game two.

Indiana (27-28, 14-17) jumped on Michigan State early in both games. In game one, IU scored three runs in the top of the first and two more in the third to take control of the game. In the second game, the Hoosiers scored six in their first at-bat to take advantage.

Trailing 3-0 in game one, MSU scored two runs as freshman Brandon Eckerle and senior Steve Gerstenberger smacked RBI singles.

With Indiana leading 5-2 in the fourth, freshman Jeff Holm singled and scored on a sac fly by Jonathan Roof.

Indiana's Josh Phegley, the Big Ten's leading hitter, singled and scored in the top of the fifth inning and David Trager scored an unearned run in the sixth to give the Hoosiers a 7-3 lead.

The Spartans rallied, as Jonathan Roof doubled and Roberts walked, setting the table for Day's three-run shot to right. It was his team-leading eighth homer of the season.

The Spartans did get the tying run to second base before eventually running out of outs.

Michigan State (24-28, 12-17) found itself in a big 6-0 hole early in the second game. Junior right-hander Mark Sorensen entered the game with one out in the first and promptly stopped the Indiana onslaught. Sorensen worked 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on eight hits. He didn't allow a run until the seventh inning.

Jonathan Roof had a two-run single in the second inning as Michigan State pulled to within 6-3 with Sorensen dealing on the mound.

Indiana reliever Matt Carr was just as effective and held the Spartans at bay, working five shutout innings. He scattered four hits and improved his record to 2-1. Freshman righty A.J. Achter (1-3) took the loss for Michigan State.

Indiana ace Matt Bashore (7-3) went the distance in game one allowing eight hits and six walks. Senior Chris Cullen (5-4) was pinned with the loss.

A day after scoring four times on Thursday, Indiana's Andrew Means had four hits and scored twice on the day. He also made a spectacular throw to gun down a Spartan baserunner at the plate in the second game. Phegley had four hits and scored four runs in the two games.

Michigan State will play its final game of the 2008 season Saturday, May 17 against Indiana at Kobs Field. MSU's 12 seniors will be recognized in a ceremony prior to the game.
