NEW YORK (AP) -- The season has just begun, but the Tigers are among the top teams in at least one category -- salaries.
An "Associated Press" study of major leaguers' contract terms shows the New York Yankees have baseball's biggest payroll, at 209 million dollars.
Boosted by the acquisition of Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, Detroit shot up to second at 138.7 million dollars. The Tigers' payroll at the end of last season was 12th at 98.5 million.
The New York Mets were third at 138.3 million dollars, and the World Series champion Boston Red Sox were fourth at 133.4 million.
For the eighth straight season, the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez draws the majors' biggest paycheck -- 28 million dollars.
