DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings are bringing back hard-nosed fan favorite Darren McCarty after a four-year absence.
The team says Monday that McCarty signed a one-year contract.
Detroit general manager Ken Holland says McCarty earned the opportunity to return to Detroit, where he played from 1993 to 2004. He has been productive in comeback stints with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and the International Hockey League's Flint Generals.
The 35-year-old right wing has been assigned to Grand Rapids on a 14-day conditioning loan. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
McCarty was scoreless in 32 games last season, his second with the Calgary Flames.
He helped the Red Wings win Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
