Suspended Michigan State quarterback Jeff Smoker apologized Thursday for the substance abuse problems that led to his removal from play.

The junior told reporters that he hopes to prove to Michigan State's next coach that he deserves another chance. He says he wants to return to the field as a Spartan next season, if possible.

The apology was Smoker's first public remarks since being suspended indefinitely Oct. 24 for violating team rules.

Coach Bobby Williams was fired Nov. 4 by Michigan State. Williams' firing came the day after Smoker's family announced the quarterback was battling substance abuse.
