DETROIT (AP) -- Tyler Shelast had two goals and an assist to lift Michigan Tech to a 4-1 win over defending NCAA champion Michigan State in a semifinal of the Great Lakes Invitational Tournament at Joe Louis Arena on Friday.
It was the first time Michigan Tech (7-8-2) has beaten Michigan State since Dec. 27, 1991, breaking an 11-game losing streak to the Spartans (12-4-2).
The Huskies will play Michigan in the championship game on Saturday night. Michigan State will face Providence in the third-place game on Saturday afternoon.
Michigan beat Providence 6-0 in Friday's first game.
Peter Rouleau and Jimmy Kerr each had a goal and an assist for Michigan Tech and Rob Nolan made 28 saves.
Tim Kennedy scored for Michigan State.
Rouleau gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead 8:50 into the second period.
Shelast clinched the game with an empty-net goal with 49 seconds left and Kerr scored with 26 seconds remaining.
Shelast's power-play goal gave Michigan Tech a 1-0 lead with 6:13 left in the first period. Kennedy tied it for MSU with 4:54 left in the opening period.
