The Detroit Pistons have exercised their option to extend forward Jason Maxiell's contract through the 2008-2009 season.
Maxiell was drafted with the 26th pick overall in 2005 and is expected to play a key role in Detroit this season.
He played 67 games last season, averaging five points, three rebounds and a block in 14 minutes a game.
The Pistons also have signed guard Gerald Fitch, who played in Europe last season after being cut by the Washington Wizards.
He played in 18 games for the Miami Heat during the 2005-06 season.
