A newspaper analysis finds Michigan universities increased spending on administrators by about 30 percent in the past five years as student enrollment and state funding remained about the same.
The Detroit Free Press reports Sunday the increases took place between 2005 and 2010. Figures submitted last month by the schools to the state's budget office show the number of administrative jobs grew 19 percent during the period.
School officials say the additional money spent on administrators is justified to get and keep the best people. They also say more employees are needed because credit hours have risen even if enrollment hasn't.
The increases come as university presidents are calling on lawmakers to limit proposed budget cuts.
