DETROIT (AP) -- New General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson has named Vice Chairman Tom Stephens to the newly created post of global chief technology officer -- a role he says will ensure GM's technology keeps up with customer needs and ahead of the competition.
Stephens says he will head research and development and work with other departments to spot new technology and bring it to market. He previously served as head of product development. A replacement will be announced soon.
This is the latest in a series of executive changes that Akerson has made. He replaced the head of GM's OnStar unit on Tuesday. In December, he promoted U.S. marketing head Joel Ewanick to be global chief marketing officer.
