Former Detroit School Board President Otis Mathis has appeared in court on charges that he fondled himself during a meeting with District Superintendent Teresa Gueyser.

The 55-year-old Mathis was released on a $50,000 personal bond and ordered to have no contact with Gueyser.

Mathis also was told he couldn't have contact with children at any school or school board members and to surrender his passport.

He has been charged with misconduct in office and obscene conduct. Neither Mathis nor his attorney commented after the hearing.

A preliminary examination is set for July 30.

Mathis resigned June 17. He wrote to the board that he "made inappropriate actions toward a professional employee" and regretted his actions.
