Democratic state Rep. Martin Griffin and former Republican Rep. Mike Nofs will face off in November to fill a vacancy in the Michigan Senate.
With 97 percent of the vote counted in Tuesday's special primary election, Griffin, of Jackson, beat paralegal and organic farmer Sharon Renier of Munith, with nearly 66 percent of the vote to 34 percent. Nofs, of Battle Creek, topped real estate agent C. James Wellman of Parma with 87 percent of the vote compared to 13 percent for Wellman.
The winner of the Nov. 3 general election will complete the term of Democrat Mark Schauer of Battle Creek, who vacated the 19th District seat when he was elected to Congress last year. His state Senate term runs through the end of 2010.
