A German SS soldier's photos of Hungarian Jews arriving at the Auschwitz death camp in World War II Poland have gone on display at the Holocaust Memorial Center in suburban Detroit.
The exhibition "The Auschwitz Album" opens Wednesday at the museum in Farmington Hills. It was created by the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem.
Then-18-year old Lili Jacob was one of 3,500 deportees on the 1944 train transport. She discovered the photos, which included her family and friends. A soldier charged with documenting the identities of arrivals apparently took them.
The opening comes on the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the camp, where the Nazi gassed or otherwise killed about 1.1 million people, mainly Jews.
