Provincial police chief Mohammad Nabi Ilham says the residents of the town of Qalat were protesting a NATO operation that killed three suspected insurgents overnight.
He says Taliban fighters shot dead one policeman and wounded two others. Afghan police returned fire, killing the two civilians and also wounding two others.
