ISLAMABAD (AP) -- The Pakistani air force says militants have attacked one of its air bases in the northwest and are engaged in a heavy battle with security forces.
The air force statement says forces have cordoned off the area around Kamra Airbase.
Police officer Hafeez Aulakh says the militants entered the air base before dawn Thursday. He was standing outside the air base and could hear intense gunfire and see flames leaping up from inside.
Kamra Airbase is located in Punjab province, about 85 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of the capital, Islamabad.
