THREE RIVERS, Mich. (AP) -- A southwestern Michigan police officer says he spent three days of a Mexican vacation jailed after unintentionally traveling with bullets.
Three Rivers Officer Michael Herman says the St. Joseph County's prosecutor's office, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton and the CIA helped secure his release from a Mexican federal jail earlier this month.
Herman says he didn't know the bag he told his wife to pack contained a box of 19 bullets.
The Three Rivers Commercial-News and The Sturgis Journal reported this week that the Hermans arrived on the island of Cozumel April 28, and a security scanner found the bullets. The U.S. Consulate was called and the Hermans were taken to a police station.
Herman says he was released after the governmental assist and $500 sent by his mother for bond.
