KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- Thousands of Jamaicans gathered outside the island's national stadium to celebrate the Caribbean country's 50th anniversary of independence from Britain.
Many of Monday's revelers wore the national colors of gold, black and green as they walked around a "golden jubilee village" showcasing Jamaica's history, food and culture.
Some displays paid tribute to prominent islanders like black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey and reggae icon Bob Marley.
The celebration comes a day after Jamaican sprinters Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake thrilled their homeland by winning the gold and silver medals in the 100- meter dash at the London Olympics.
But the anniversary was not a reason for everyone to cheer. Some islanders argue that Jamaica has fallen behind in the five decades since it achieved independence, largely due to political mismanagement.
