India: 41 Dead in Building Collapse

A 4-story building under construction collapses in Mumbai, India. As least 41 people are killed.

MUMBAi, INDIA - At least 41 people are dead and more than 50 others injured after a building collapse in Mumbai, India. Authorities said the partially-finished eight-story building was being constructed illegally. Rescue workers struggled to break through the rubble in their search for possible survivors. Bulldozers were brought to the scene. At least four floors of the building had been completed and were occupied. Workers had finished three more floors and were adding an eighth floor when the building collapsed. Some of the dead included construction workers who were staying in the building as they worked on it. "We got the information that around 120 persons must be trapped. So far we have taken care of 101, 60 alive and 41 dead. We are expecting 24 more persons," said Alok Avasthi the Commandant of National Disaster Response Force . The cause of the collapse wasn't immediately clear.
