KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) -- An emergency official says an explosion has struck a Catholic church holding mass in northern Nigeria, injuring worshippers.
A spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency said the explosion happened Sunday morning at St. Rita Catholic church in Kaduna. The spokesman, Yushau Shuaib, says ambulances were taking the injured to the hospital. He said it was immediately unclear how many had been injured.
Soldiers and police had surrounded the church after the blast.
Kaduna has seen other attacks on churches in recent months. Sunday's attack comes during a string of guerilla attacks by an Islamist group known as Boko Haram, however no one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
