BAGHDAD (AP) -- Back-to-back bombings and a string of shootings have killed at least 17 people in Iraq.

The bombs exploded within about a minute of each other in a crowded market near a Shiite shrine in Baghdad. Police say at least 11 people were killed and 35 wounded.

Earlier today, gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad, killing two policemen and wounding another.

Near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint and killed three officers, according to police officials.

Authorities also say gunmen killed a police lieutenant colonel late yesterday in Baghdad.
