Annan Calls Syria Situation `Bleak'

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- International envoy Kofi Annan has told the U.N. Security Council that the situation in Syria is "bleak," expressing particular alarm at reports that government troops entered the central city of Hama firing automatic weapons, killing a number of people.
He echoed Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in calling the current situation "unacceptable" and called on the Syrian government to immediately implement his six-point peace-plan.
In his closed briefing Tuesday to the council, which was obtained by the Associated Press, he urged the government and opposition to respect the April 12 cease-fire. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
