GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) -- There's been continued rocket fire from Gaza into Israel, even after a cease-fire took effect. An Israeli police spokesman says at least 12 rockets were fired into Israel an hour into the truce.
Under the terms of the deal, Israel promised to stop its airstrikes, and Hamas said there would be a halt to the rocket attacks.
In Gaza, people have emerged from their homes, welcoming the agreement to end eight days of fighting. Israel launched well over 1,500 airstrikes and other attacks on targets in Gaza since the fighting started last week, while more than 1,500 rockets pounded Israel. In all, more than 160 Palestinians died, including dozens of civilians. Five Israelis were killed.
The deal was brokered by the new Islamist government of Egypt after two days of shuttle diplomacy that saw Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton race into the region. Under the agreement, Egypt will play a key role in maintaining the peace.
