What's Going Around

In Okemos, Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care is treating the summer cold this week.

That is a type of rhinovirus that includes viral upper respiratory infections.

The first symptom is usually fatigue, followed by scratchy throat, runny and stuffy nose, cough and possibly a fever.

This virus can last from two to three days. The cough usually lingers about a week. The summer cold usually runs its course within seven to 10 days.

To treat a summer cold, take Tylenol or Ibuprofen for fever control and sore throat pain relief.

Drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration and get plenty of rest so your body can fight off the virus effectively.

If you have a high and persistent fever greater than 102.5 degrees, you should see a doctor.
