What's Going Around

We start in Michigan Center, where Dr. Rubina Shaikh of Allegiance Health is treating pink eye.

It is very contagious.

Common symptoms include: crusty eyelids that are difficult to open when waking up, eye redness and swelling, and mucus or watery discharge. You may also feel like there is something in your eye, be sensitive to light, or have an itchy or burning feeling in the eye.

Viral pink eye is a common condition that will go away in seven to 10 days, even without medical treatment.

You may want to use anti-inflammatory medications to decrease itching, pain and redness. Cold compresses can relieve swelling

Bacterial conjunctivitis requires antibiotics.

In Okemos, Dr. James Brouillette at Ingham Community Medical Center, a partner of Ingham Regional, is treating poison ivy.

Symptoms include an itchy, red, raised rash that often appears in lines or streaks. The rash forms blisters that break open and ooze fluid.

There may be localized swelling and a feeling of warmth at the exposed area.

Without treatment, the rash usually lasts 10 days to three weeks.

Most cases of poison ivy can be treated at home. Wash the irritant off the skin as soon as possible with soap and hot water, take an oral antihistamine to relieve symptoms and prevent a secondary allergic reaction, and use a cold compress to relieve itch and make the blisters dry out.

Try not to scratch. Contrary to popular belief, itching won't spread the poison ivy rash. It can, however, result in scarring or a secondary bacterial infection, especially if your hands are not clean.

A serious case of poison ivy should be seen by a doctor. See a doctor if you have swelling of the face, mouth, neck or eyelids; a widespread rash across the body, or if you have signs of infection
